Working together can be hard. Who decides how we do things?
We could let someone tell us what to do. That person might tell us to do things we really don’t want to do, though. We could vote. But half of the group might really not like the outcome!
We should let everyone have a voice. That might be a lot of people though, and a lot of talking! To make things simpler, let people decide only the things that are relevant to them. Let girls make decisions that affect girls, boys make decisions that affect boys, and so on.
When we’re making decisions, we should give every person a chance to speak, so we can hear what they have to say. What if people decide something that someone really doesn’t like? That’s okay, it just means we should try again. Not everyone is going to get exactly what they want all the time, but everyone should at least be okay with whatever decision is made.
When a decision affects more than one group, we should talk to each other, so we can all be on the same page.
Here’s a helpful summary:
- Groups should be kept to manageable sizes, and decisions should be made by the people they will affect.
- Everyone in a group should have a chance to speak.
- Decisions should be tolerable for everyone, even if they aren’t everyone’s preference.
- Communication between groups ensures that everyone can be on the same page.
